Cold Plunges for a Brighter World

Grady Semmens’ January Cold Plunge Challenge for Light Up The World

This January, Calgary-based cold plunge enthusiast Grady Semmens is taking on an extraordinary personal challenge to help bring clean, reliable electricity to communities that need it most.

As Board Chair of Light Up The World (LUTW), Grady is committing to 31 cold plunges in 31 days, braving icy rivers and ice baths throughout a Canadian winter. Each plunge represents resilience, determination, and a shared belief that access to electricity can transform lives.

The challenge is simple:
endure the cold so others can step into the light.

Why a Cold Plunge?

Cold plunging is about more than physical endurance. It demands presence, discipline, and the ability to push past discomfort.

For Grady, it is also a powerful metaphor for the work Light Up The World does every day.

“Cold plunging forces you to be present and push past the voice that tells you to stop. I wanted to challenge myself in a way that reflects the perseverance I see in the LUTW team every single day.”
— Grady Semmens

While Grady faces freezing temperatures in Calgary, LUTW staff and volunteers are working in some of the world’s most challenging environments. From the high Andes to the Amazon rainforest in Peru, teams install renewable energy systems that bring lasting change to remote, off-grid communities.

Inspired by Impact

Light Up The World partners with communities that lack reliable access to electricity, delivering sustainable renewable energy solutions that support:

  • Education and learning after sunset

  • Health clinics and safer medical care

  • Improved safety, dignity, and quality of life

  • Local capacity-building and long-term sustainability

In places where rugged terrain, extreme weather, and isolation make access difficult, LUTW works hand in hand with communities to create solutions that last.

“When I think about our teams hauling equipment into remote villages in the Andes or the Amazon, often under incredibly difficult conditions, it puts a cold river dip into perspective. Their dedication is what inspired me to take this on.”
— Grady Semmens
