LUTW established its first field office in Peru to serve the estimated 4 million people in the country without access to electricity. While the office opened in 2010, LUTW has been supporting off-grid families transition to renewable energy in Peru since 2004. LUTW has prioritized working with partners in the regions of Apurimac, Huancavelica and Loreto: some of the most remote and underserved parts of Peru.

Below are pictures and a map, which highlight recent and upcoming projects.

Nueva York Renewable Energy Project988732_466355623449431_230550407_n

Local partner: FECONABAT
Solar systems installed in: 1 Education Centre
Local technicians trained: 7
Training and installations completed: May 2013

Click here to see pictures from this project

Community Profile: The community of Nueva York has approximately 800 residents who sustain a livelihood by fishing from the Tiger river, small-scale agriculture (corn, rice, plantains, aguaje, yucca), and temporary labour in Iquitos. There is a 40kW generator that provides three hours of electricity for the community most nights for a monthly fee. A brand new Educational Centre was completed in October 2011 and a computer classroom was installed as a part of the new facility with accompanying generator. For a community that already has a higher demand for electricity than the community can afford to provide, the computer classroom sat idle due to a lack of energy to be able to operate.

Next to the community centre they have constucted a llama bath canal to keep the families´ many herds spick-and-span; some of these breeds have been carefully selected for distinguishing hide-colours and other characteristics. Parionaccocha is one of the second highest altitude project LUTW has completed to date, with some homes situated as high as 4800 metres above sea level. In fact it snowed during the night before the last day of installations. The quick changing mountain climate is always altering the landscape, from snow covered colours to sunlit braes carved from glaciers and high altitude winds.
