May 2, 2009 - Light Up Papua New Guinea - The 2nd Chapter (Calgary, Alberta)

In May 2008, the first chapter of the Light Up Papua New Guinea, The Captain Nichola Goddard Project, took shape in the form of a unique gala fundraiser, where $180,000 was raised. The story continued later in the year, when in July, we were part of the team that traveled to Papua New Guinea to install solar light systems in some of the first of the 1,800 medical aid stations around the country.

When our daughter, Captain Nichola Goddard, was killed on May 17, 2006 in Afghanistan, we felt moved to create a legacy in her name. The Light Up Papua New Guinea project brings together Nichola's birth place and a legacy to a people that helped shape Nichola's life in serving others.

The project we have undertaken with Light Up The World will bring solar light to over 1,800 medical aid posts around Papua New Guinea. With this project, these posts will be able to provide vital medical service to the surrounding communities 24 hours a day.

There is still more to do, but with the help of all our sponsors, guests and volunteers, the project was brought to life and we'd like to invite you to see the result of that contribution. In one way or another, you contributed to the success of the first chapter and we invite you to be a part of the second chapter.

The first stations are just the beginning in reaching our goal of all 1,800 by July 2011. We want to thank those that participated last year by creating a casual event where you can come during the day to view some amazing photos and descriptive videos of the project and people of Papua New Guinea. But more importantly, it's an event to meet and connect with the team that traveled to Papua New Guinea and listen to the stories.

We invite you, once again, to take part in this event. May 2, 2009 would have been Nichola's 29th birthday and we want to celebrate it again with those that brought this project to life. On May 2nd, come to enjoy the company of those that helped make this project real, meet those that were there installing the lights, and see some incredible images of the project and the people of Papua New Guinea.

All funds raised at the event will once again go towards Nichola's project. With your support, we are reaching our goal.
